Club Update: August 2025 😎

Hello members! It’s been a while so this is quite a long one - please do read, it’s all jolly important stuff.

Thanks to everyone who attended the AGM on 17th July. The debate was lively and we received many useful suggestions. We’re moving ahead quickly with many of these to keep the Club running as smoothly and safely as we can and continue its “object to afford to its members the means of social intercourse, moral helpfulness, mental and moral improvement and rational recreation” (Club Rules, 1.(3)… honest!!)

🗓️ Dates for your diary

Friday 5th September: Club centenary evening

To mark this most auspicious of dates (which actually falls on 1st September) the new Club flag will be hoisted to an appropriate musical accompaniment, followed by barbequed beast and the greatest hits of 1925.

Saturday 13th September 10am - 12pm: Coffee morning

In aid of the Ben Saunders Foundation, hosted by Margaret Gill and her quite remarkable baked treats! As the nights draw in, expect more coffee mornings over the next few months.

Friday 19th September: Special General Meeting

Special General Meeting to vote in new trustees (who will be announced on the night). It’ll be a brief, single purpose meeting, but we need at least 20 members voting the proposed incumbents in. As an added incentive, everyone voting (whatever their voting intention!) will be rewarded for exercising their democratic prerogative with a free drink.

Friday 9th January 2026: Members’ meeting

Taking on board a suggestion from the AGM to have the opportunity for members to discuss Club issues and ideas outside of the AGM with the whole committee and trustees - more details nearer the time.

In the meantime, we’re always keen to get feedback and ideas of how the Club can change / be at its best etc, so Jimmy has constructed a suggestions box that now lives on the bar. Please feel free to post any suggestions/comments (in addition to the empty packet of Twiglets that it solely contains at the the moment) and we’ll check it monthly at the Committee meeting.

Not ignoring the yawning gap between September and January… but watch this space.

🍻 Bar shifts

Many thanks to all the landlords and ladies for the night who’ve kept the bar running Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The club absolutely depends on volunteers to man the pump and even one shift once in a while helps to keep the doors open and the lights on.

If you’re keen to get a taste of this very special and highly amusing form of public service and haven’t given it a try, contact the committee and we’ll train you up. It’s a highly intensive and rewarding training that stretches out over nearly 20 minutes…

For the time being, we’ll be posting a WhatsApp poll in the Club Announcements channel at the beginning of every month for the month after, so please sign up there if you can. If you haven’t got WhatsApp, please tell a committee member or email us at info@southwraxallclub.co.uk.

🪪 Membership

The club membership has remained a remarkably good value £10/year for longer than many of us can remember. However, in light of the escalating cost of everything, the fee will be increasing to £12/year for now, with the renewal date remaining 1st January.

What’s been a bit unfair, however, has been having to pay £10 whatever time of year someone new becomes a member, so the magic number of £12 allows us to charge £12 minus the number of months (or part thereof) left in the year - so, for example, new members joining in September will pay £4 for this year.

We’re moving rapidly toward online membership signup (but payment at the bar for the time being), with paper forms still being available if you want/need/insist.

You can also now access the Club Membership Directory. Please note your membership number as it might have changed during our database clean-up.

If you have any issues getting in to the directory, it means we don’t have your correct email address - please email info@southwraxallclub.co.uk and we’ll sort it out. We need your contact details to be correct for the WhatsApp community and emails! 🙂

👏 Committee members

Tim, Ben and Ben have stepped down having served their respective time on the committee, each leaving their unique and indelible mark on Club history for which we’re all immensely grateful.

There are always jobs to do on an ongoing basis behind the scenes (and you don’t have to be a committee member to help out) but new members would be very welcome to not only keep things running smoothly, but to help us make sure the Club is fun for as many different folks hereabouts as possible - just contact us if you are interested or want to know more.

That’s enough rational recreation for now!
